Age-matched male hCG transgenics had comparable BMD to WT animals. This may be because the bone density in male mice reaches a plateau response at physiological sex steroid concentrations in WT mice; thus, a further increase in sex steroid concentrations as seen in the transgenic mice1 has no additional effect on the bone. Overall, these in vivo and in vitro investigations support an indirect effect of gonadotropins on the skeleton. In view of the immunolocalization, immunoblotting and nested RTPCR, our findings suggest that osteoblasts may express either low receptor numbers and or the presence of nonfunctional receptors. The Anglo-American Combined Bomber Offensive was a unique historical event. From September 1939 through May 1945, the four-engine bombers of the US Army Air Forces and the strategic bombers of the British Royal Air Force flew 410, 000 and 300, 000 effective sorties, respectively. Each air force dropped more than 1, 000, 000 tons of bombs on enemy targets in Europe, the Mediterranean, and North Africa.1 So complex have modern aircraft become that never again will fleets of massed heavy bombers using iron bombs make strategic or tactical attacks on enemy targets. Research in and the compilation and reconciliation of the original records have produced new insights into the nature of the Allied bomber offensive.
