Eters showed the best performance, CC 0.43 0.35 versus 0.31 0.25 for ProQ-LG ProQ-MX; Table 1 ; . This is probably caused by the facts that Residue-6 is less noisy and that certain important properties are displayed more clearly in Residue-6 than in Residue-20. One such property is the contacts between hydrophobic residues discussed above, which are much more clearly displayed in Residue-6 as one single parameter, whereas the same information in Residue20 is shared among all contacts with other hydrophobic residues 21 different contact types in this case ; . The performance of residueresidue contacts is similar to the performance obtained by using atomatom contacts. Solvent accessibility surfaces Solvent accessibility surfaces were described as a classification into one of four different bins, 25%, 25%50%, 50%75%, and 75% exposure. Feed. Unfortunately, it was not feasible to predict before the transmission trials whether fish were releasing spores. Post-transmission microscopic examination of kidney indicated that the fish used in Trials 2a and 2b had not yet reached the stage of recovery from PKD dominated by release of spores from sporogonic stages, although some sporogonic stages were detected. Conducting these trials in flow-through systems may also have influenced transmission by greatly reducing spore concentrations. Microscopic examination indicated that a proportion of the fish used in Trials 2c and 2d had sporogonic stages, and the conduction of these trials in buckets increased the possibility of spore contact with bryozoans. However, random selection of fish for trials and lack of knowledge about actual spore release in urine during trials hamper the interpretation of results. Similarly, infective stages may have been present in low concentration when bryozoans were exposed to macerated fish kidney. Filtering of the water used in transmission studies to determine concentrations of infective stages was not conducted. This would not have been feasible in the trials conducted in the flow-through systems. In addition, the soft, unprotected spores are likely to adhere and disintegrate on contact with filters, making their identification and quantification exceedingly difficult. Despite the above caveats, there is some evidence that low concentrations of Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae spores must be effective at achieving infection. Concentrations of spores released from bryozoans should be exceedingly low for much of the year given the generally low prevalence of infections in bryozoan populations Okamura et al. 2001, Okamura & Wood 2002, S. Tops & B. Okamura unpubl. data ; . In addition, fish are routinely immunised by developing subclinical infections through exposure to waters enzootic for PKD in autumn, when water temperatures are decreasing Longshaw et al. 2002 ; and when prevalence of infection in bryozoan populations is low S. Tops & B. Okamura unpubl. data ; . Furthermore, Feist et al. 2001 ; obtained transmission of T. bryosalmonae by cohabitation of fish with infected bryozoan material in a flowthrough system where the continuous loss of spores should have resulted in low concentration. Hedrick et al. 2004 ; estimated a maximum concentration of 120 T. bryosalmonae spores ml1 fish urine, thus spores should become highly dilute upon release from fish in natural populations. These observations suggest that spores from both bryozoans and fish would have to be effective in contacting and infecting hosts at very low concentrations. An ability to achieve transmission at low concentration should be highly adaptive for dilute water-borne spores, and we would expect this to be true for all infective stages in the life cycle of T. bryosalmonae, be they stages achieving transmission.

Figure 6-1 was obtained by summing the minimum numbers of permanent scientists indicated by the respondents in one domain. This gives a rough lower estimate of the population of permanent researchers in the surveyed RIs in each domain. Altogether more than 25 500 scientists are working permanently in these facilities. This estimate does not take into account possible personnel's overlaps between several RIs within a common owning institution. More than 146 700 external users have access to the surveyed RIs10. The overall pattern of Figure 6-1 is very similar to that of Figure 2-3 displaying the number of RIs per domain . This means that the average minimum number of permanent scientists per RI does not vary much across domains. Figure 6-2 indeed shows this number is typically about 40 permanent scientists per facility, with a peak to 54 for Material Sciences and a minimum of 27 in Social Sciences and hepsera.

"We put it off because it was one of the most important decisions we had to make, " said editor Ken Sullivan. We have all the iconic scenes inside the book, Seneca Rocks, Spruce Knob, the New River bridge, State Capitol, and so forth. But we wanted the cover to represent all of West Virginia rather than a particular place or part of the state, no matter how beautiful. "Once we began to think that way, we knew we were really looking for a symbol -- and what better symbol of West Virginia than a handcrafted quilt? Quilts reach back to the early roots of our culture and still have a place in homes rich and poor. They are things of both beauty and practical value. "As it happens, we had a beautiful quilt photo in the book, illustrating the article on quilts. The quilt belongs to the West Virginia State Museum and was made by the late Gertrude Bloom of Fayette County. It is in the familiar `Star of Bethlehem' pattern. "We extracted the star itself for the jacket front, then ran the full quilt on the inside flap with an attribution to Mrs. Bloom and the Museum, " Sullivan said. "And that completed our transition from bedcover to book cover and humalog.
