Adesiyun The Caribbean Amblyomma Programme: A Premature Demise? ~ Rupert G. Pegram and Ranleen Lloyd 92 96 Absence of EG-VEGF in endometrial and ovarian cancer is still not clear. In most assisted reproduction programs, gonadotropins are given to stimulate the development of multiple oocytes so that multiple embryos can be transferred to enhance the success rate. However, we have previously demonstrated that the supraphysiological hormonal concentrations resulting from gonadotropin stimulation could significantly reduce the implantation and pregnancy rates in patients with serum estradiol concentration of 20, 000 pmol liter excessive responders ; 13 ; . The low implantation rate is likely the result of the gland-stromal dyssynchrony of the peri-implantation endometrium 12 ; . In the natural cycle, the endometrial glands were either more tortuous or numerous at the presumed time of implantation. There appears to be a trend toward a decline in the glandular volume fraction and glandular diameter with the rise in the serum estradiol concentrations. More importantly, significant differences in the glandular and stromal components in these high responders were associated with enhanced vessel development 12 ; . Thus, we believed that the marked increase in stromal vessels leads to in advanced stromal maturation and gland-stromal dyssynchrony. Because EG-VEGF expression is highly dependent on the ovarian steroids, it would be interesting to investigate the possible involvement of EG-VEGF in the estradiol induced gland-stromal dyssynchrony in peri-implantation endometrium. The data from this study could give useful information on the correlation of the EG-VEGF expression and the stromal vessels development. Taken together, we have provided additional data complementary to a recent study by Battersby et al. 7 ; . We demonstrated that 1 ; EG-VEGF is expressed in the human peri-implantation endometrium; 2 ; the expression of EG-VEGF, but not the receptors, is hormone dependent; and 3 ; its expression is not associated with the development of the endometrial carcinoma. Unlike VEGF, EG-VEGF is only expressed in the endometrium of the patients of the reproductive age. Thus, we believe this novel angiogenic factor and its receptors would play a significant role in peri-implantation endometrium through autocrine paracrine signaling mechanisms.

The U.S. and Canadian economies are intrinsically linked. While the Canadian economy is approximately one-tenth of the size of that of the U.S., the two countries are each others' largest trading partner. Production methods and environmental concerns in the two countries are similar, and many businesses are actively engaged in cross-border trade. However, there are many differences in the countries, including environmental regulatory systems. Comparing the environmental performance of industrial sectors in the two countries is of significant interest from economic, technical and public policy perspectives. However, comparisons are difficult due to many factors and have been limited in practice. Important in any comparison is a `life-cycle' approach, where the economy-wide implications of production by the industrial sectors are included. Additionally of key importance is the analysts' understanding of the limitations of the comparison. We discuss this issue in detail in this work. Economic input-output life-cycle assessment EIO-LCA ; models for the U.S. have been developed by the Green Design Initiative at Carnegie Mellon University. We have developed a similar model for Canada. These models allow the inclusion of the economy-wide economic and environmental impacts resulting from demand for products services from sectors of the economy. An important consideration in life-cycle assessment is the inclusion of the set of indirect effects that do not lie along the main industrial supply chain. EIO-LCA models allow these indirect effects to be considered, which can enhance our understanding of the `true' benefits and disadvantages of product production and associated environmental programs and policies. Our model estimates the increases in National Pollutant Release Inventory NPRI ; contaminant releases, greenhouse gas emissions, energy and non-renewable resource extraction and use that can be expected from increases in demands for goods or services in Canada. In this work, we present an EIO-LCA model for the Canadian economy and determine the sectors of the economy which have the largest impacts on the environment with respect to energy and non-renewable resource use, greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions. In addition, we compare a number of key sectors in the Canadian economy with corresponding sectors in the U.S. economy with respect to the above environmental metrics. Finally, we investigate the sources of differences in the results i.e., differences in the structure of the economies, the environmental performance of the sectors, differing regulations, technologies, etc. ; . Future research using the Canadian and U.S. models will attempt to address the economic and environmental linkages between the two countries. Patients increased from 9.7 g dL at baseline to 11.5 g dL by Week 10 in the epoetin alpha treatment group, and from 9.7 g dL to 9.9 g dL at the same time point in the placebo group. Conclusion: Results indicate that the administration of epoetin alpha to anaemic cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy results in a rapid increase in Hb level. These findings are clinically relevant, as maintaining Hb levels around 12 g dL higher during chemotherapy can prevent the deterioration in QOL associated with anaemia and its sequelae, par ticularly fatigue and fennel.

LRP expression in de novo AML at diagnosis. Eighty-six AML patients were studied for LRP expression in their leukemic cells at diagnosis. LRP expression was immunocytochemically determined by means of the MoAb LRP-56. Samples were scored LRP positive if 5% positive staining blasts were detected. LRP was positive in 31 of 36% ; patients Table 1 ; . LRP was positive in 20 of 40% ; peripheral blood samples and 13 of 49 27% ; bone marrow samples. In those 13 cases where samples from both sources were studied, no differences between peripheral and bone marrow blasts were observed data not shown ; . LRP and clinical parameters. Next we studied the association of LRP with clinical parameters. The major clinical and laboratory findings of the patients are summarized in Table 1. The median age of the patients was 56 years range, 15 to 88 years ; . LRP expression correlated with white blood cell count P .01 ; but was independent of age, percentage of patients older than 50 years, sex, serum lactate dehydrogenase levels, and cytogenetic abnormalities Table 1 ; . Interestingly, 8 of 9 89% ; patients with promyelocytic leukemia FAB M3 ; did not express LRP, but this was not significantly different from other FAB subtypes P .1 ; . Karyotype was categorized into three prognostic groups see Patients and Methods ; . LRP expression was not significantly different between these groups Table 1 ; , although patients with good prognosis karyotype showed a trend P .1 ; toward negative LRP Table 1 ; . Ferenci Peter, Prof. of Medicine, Dept. of Internal Med. IV University of Vienna, Austria More than 150 mutations of the Wilson Disease WD ; gene have been described so far. Due to this large number, mutation analysis is of limited value for diagnosis of WD and is still based on the presence of typical symptoms or laboratory abnormalities. If the disease is diagnosed by phenotypic criteria, m utation analysis does not add any additional information. This may change if gene therapy will become a therapeutic option in future. Genetic testing may be useful in patients with unclear phenotypical diagnosis, for population screening and for testing of first degree relatives of a patient. Basically there are two different approaches for gene analysis: Direct mutation analysis should detect specific mutations of a particular gene. This can be achieved by specific PCR-based mutation assays or by direct sequencing of the whole gene. If a mutation has a high frequency in a certain population, detection of a particular mutation may be helpful to support the diagnosis of WD. This is the case for the H1069Q mutation in patients of Central or Eastern European origin detectable in 50 to 85% of patients ; , the R778L mutation in patients from Far-Eastern countries about 1 3 of patients ; or mutations in the 2-UTR in patients from Sardinia. The genetic diagnosis of WD can only be made, if mutations on both chromosomes can be detected. The absence of a detectable mutation never excludes WD. An abnormal, yet undescribed sequence, detected by direct sequencing, does not allow the diagnosis of WD unless it is proven that it is a disease causing mutation and not just a DNA-polymorphism. In 2007, it is estimated that 51, 190 people will be diagnosed with and 12, 890 deaths will be attributed to cancers of the kidney and renal pelvis the vast majority of which are renal cell carcinoma [RCC] ; in the United States.1 During the past 2 decades, the incidence of these cancers has increased by approximately 2% per year.2 RCC represents the third leading cause of death among genitourinary malignancies and the twelfth leading cause of cancer death overall in the United States.1 The lack of demonstrable efficacy of chemotherapy and radiation therapy in Stage IV RCC has led to a 5-year survival ranging from 5% to 10%.3, 4 Historically, the known immunogenicity of RCC has been the basis supporting the use of immunotherapy in metastatic RCC.5 Current immunotherapeutic regimens use recombinant human interleukin-2 IL-2 ; and recombinant human interferon -2b IFN- ; , either alone or in combination.6-13 The use of these cytokines, however, is limited by their toxicity and generally poor overall response rates. Recent progress in understanding the biology of RCC has led to the identification of vascular endothelial growth factor VEGF ; as a potential therapeutic target in patients with metastatic clear-cell RCC. VEGF is the most potent proangiogenic protein, leading to increased tumor vasculature and metastatic growth. Several studies using different strategies to inhibit VEGF signaling have demonstrated significant antitumor effects and meaningful clinical benefits. The comprehensive management of the metastatic RCC patient has thus been refined and flax. The New Left's AIDS-Related Scientism In the last two decades, the so-called Sexual Revolution of the 1960s and 1970s died. It did not die in the sense that people's sexual habits reverted to some pre-1960 standard of heterosexuality and monogamy. Actual behavior changed very little in the 1980s; and, at any rate, the 1950s and before were never as sexually limited as they are often imagined in contrast to what seemingly "must have" happened with the Sexual Revolution. In a sense, very little has probably changed in human sexual behavior since the advent of mass urbanization in the early nineteenth century. What has changed dramatically in a decade is the ideological tools and strategies used in conceptualizing sexuality, and the relation of sexuality to broader notions of social power, political struggle, freedom and responsibility. Most of the renegotiation of sexuality has been a determined effort on the part of the right-wing to reinstitute its fantasy conception of "family values, " normative heterosexuality, and condemnation of non-monogamy. An additional contribution to such a conservative renegotiation of meaning has come from certain self-identified feminists who have repeated the.
