Stolzer, B. L., Houser, H. B., Clark, E. J.: Comparative Effects of Aspirin, ACTH and Cortisone on the Antistreptolysin "0" Titer and Gamma Globulin Concentration in Rheumatic Fever. J. Lab. & Clin. Med. 44: 229 August ; 1954. A study was made on 144 young male rheumatics upon the effects of ACTH, cortisone, and aspirin on the antistreptolysin "0" titer and the gamma globulin concentration in serum during activity of the disease process. Treatment was carried out for six weeks. Signs of hyperadrenalism appeared in those treated with ACTH, but not in those treated with cortisone. Infection was eradicated in every individual by penicillin treatment for two weeks followed by daily sulfadiazine administration during the remainder of the study period. Antistreptolysin "0" titer fell most rapidly in ACTH treated patients. The decrease seen in cortisone and aspirin treated patients was statistically not different from the other, but it was definitely less rapid than in the ACTH treated individuals. Precisely the same effects were seen on gamma globulin concentration in the serum following these three therapeutic agents.

Total cortisol and cortisone. At almost all times the mean concentrations of total cortisol and cortisone in plasma were significantly higher during pregnancy than after parturition, both in the morning and in the afternoon. In the latter stages of pregnancy the mean values were twice.

Do you have patients who have chosen to remain antiviral nave or who have been long-term non-progressors? The CPCRA Long Term Monitoring team is looking to enrich follow-up of such patients in the LTM database. If you have individuals who may be interested to contributing to the general knowledgebase regarding nave and LTNP patients and you are currently a collaborating Consortium clinician investigator, please let your clinical research nurse know. Such individuals are often eager to participate in observational studies so that their experience can be counted! To date, 3, 180 patients are being followed on the LTM nationwide, including 153 from our site and creatine.
The inhibition of croton oil-promoted tumorigenesis in mouse skin by small amounts of locally applied natural and synthetic corticosteroid hormones is clearly established by the results in this paper. The most potent antitumor steroid, dexamethasone, at 30 fig per application delayed the onset of tumors by 90 days and produced a marked inhibition beyond that time. Our results are in agreement with the observations of Ghadially and Green 13 ; , Boutwell 5 ; , and Trainin 30 ; that cortisone and hydrocortisone inhibit croton oil-induced papillomas. Our data indicate a general correlation between the antiinflammatory and antineoplastic activities of the steroids in mice. This is best seen from the histolgica! data in Table 4. With the exception that the activity of prednisolone and dexamethasone are equal, the correlation is very good. Nakai 22 ; found a similar inhibition of methylcholanthrene-induced 100 s.c. sarcomas in mice by steroids when given in doses that were equivalent to their antiinflammatory potencies in the rat, .e., O 3 M9 dexamethasone triamcinolone methyl prednisolone 150yg prednisolone hydrocortisone cortisone Table 3 ; . These data suggest a correlation between antineoplastic and antiinflammatory activities, but these 2 effects were not measured in the same species, and methylcholanthrene was used as a complete carcinogen. The results in Table 2 and the data in Table 3 show that the rat and mouse respond differently to the antiinflammatory action of the steroids. The variable responses of the mice to the effects of the steroids on croton oil-induced mitoses merely suggest a contributory role of antimitoses to their antitumor activities. The observation that cortisone acts as a further stimulus to 40 mitoses would indicate that this hormone acts by other means. This effect has been observed by others 24 ; . The hierarchial activities of the steroid hormones should be useful in understanding the mechanism of promotion, 20 provided that good correlations can be obtained between their antitumor and other biological effects in the specific animal and tissue involved. Experiments in progress indicate such a correlation with inhibition of hair growth after plucking. This may be significant if the claim of Giovanella et al. 14 ; that neoplastic cells arise from the piliary apparatus is correct. Control Croton Croton Croton Croton Croton Croton oil oil + oil + oil + oil + oil + Promotion has been operationally separated into 2 parts, a cortisone hydroprednidexame- Schering conversion step and a propagation step 5, 18 ; . BEHAVIORAL PSYCHOSOCIAL III GG1-GG6 ; BURGUNDY A GG1: Health Care Professionals in the Making: Adolescents Choosing Careers in Health Care Zayas, Luis E, SUNY at Buffalo; McGuigan, Denise Context: Many urban and rural communities throughout the United States experience a serious shortage of health care professionals. Such medically underserved communities also have great health disparit ies. Nurturing local t alent to become health care professionals and serve their own communities may help to meet this shortage of professionals. Objective : To explore the decision-making process of adolescents in entering the pipeline for health care professions. Design: Cross-sectional study using focus group methodology. A total of seven focus groups were conducted: three in a rural town, three in an inner-city community and one pilot in another urban community of New York state. Several open-ended questions derived from a literature search were posed, and grounded-theory qualitative analysis was performed with two raters. Setting: New York state high schools. Study Participant s: Freshmen and sophomore high school students enrolled in health care pipeline programs, their parents and school staff and crixivan.
Suramin resistance in T. evansi lines appears to be stable in the field. Numerous laboratory isolates T. brucei and T. evansi ; have been selected for suramin resistance. Most laboratory resistant isolates are not crossresistant to other drugs. Neither a mode of action nor mechanisms of resistance are known.

Treating these dogs with lysodren can lead to a cortisone deficiency or, more seriously, the adrenal steroid deficiency called addison’ s disease and cortisone.
Diarrhea, hematuria, and hemorrhagic cystitis were also observed in animals receiving 100 mg kg. Similar findings were reported by Philips and associates 16 ; and by Wheeler et al. 21 ; and are attributed to drug toxicity. Treatment of mice with either cyclophosphamide or cortisone incurred a marked loss of splenic tissue, with the liver and kidneys remaining virtually unchanged 5, 14 ; . Our studies in rats have revealed similar findings; doses as low as 25 mg kg caused a significant decrease in splenic weight. This is undoubtedly a result of the severe lymphoid injury 1 ; caused by cyclophosphamide and other immunosuppressive drugs. The fact that high-dose therapy 100 mg kg ; caused an increase in the relative weight of the liver, lung, and kidney is actually a reflection of a loss of total body weight, since these three organs exhibited no significant change in their actual weights, regardless of the treatment and cycloserine
