Mechanisms associated with thymic T-cell education early in development, i.e., negative thymic selection of autoreactive T lymphocytes. How this mechanism may relate to autoimmune diabetes in humans is less clear, however. Some research has identified certain perinatal factors as increasing the risk of type 1 DM e.g., maternal age greater than 25 years, preeclampsia, neonatal respiratory disease, neonatal jaundice secondary to ABO incompatibility ; . However, the increase in risk noted in this study was small. In contrast, a significant body of research has established viral antigens and certain dietary influences as having the strongest impact on the development of autoimmune DM. Direct viral infection of pancreatic beta islet cells may play a role, but evidence for this mechanism is lacking. However, acute IgM titers to coxsackie B virus are known to be elevated in the mothers of children with type 1 DM. In addition, enteroviral infections are also more common in type 1 diabetics, as compared to their nondiabetic siblings. Congenital rubella syndrome has also been associated with the development of type 1 DM and other autoimmune syndromes up to 5 years later, especially in individuals with the HLA-DR3 haplotype. Contrary evidence also exists, however, that appears to exonerate viral infection as a triggering mechanism. Human immunization with either viral or bacterial antigens has never been shown to increase the risk of developing autoimmune diabetes. Moreover, when NOD mice and BB rats are raised in pathogen-free conditions with no viral contact, they display an increased incidence of autoimmune DM. In fact, infection of either of these animal strains by the lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus LCM ; early on in development actually protects against type 1 DM. The precise mechanism is poorly understood, however. The impact of dietary influences on the development of type 1 DM has been heavily studied. While food epitopes may not mimic beta-cell antigens directly, similar proteins from other animal species are thought to trigger autoimmune reactions leading to type 1 DM. Epidemiologic research from at least 10 countries has implicated key protein components of cow's milk including bovine serum albumin and betacasein as the most likely triggers of these autoimmune responses. However, cross-sectional and prospective studies have not confirmed these associations. In fact, some work has even suggested vitamin D confers protection against autoimmune DM. In contrast, one epidemiologic study indicated the risk of developing type 1 DM was 30 percent higher in regions of the United Kingdom where drinking water contained high levels of nitrates 14.8 mg L vs. 3.2 mg L ; . The timing of the introduction of gluten- and ricecontaining cereals into an infant's diet has also been implicated in increasing type 1 DM risk, specifically, when cereals are introduced prior to 3 months or after 7 months of age. The early introduction of rice cereals prior to 3 months is also associated with the development of celiac disease. Fortunately, these parameters correspond with the current American Board of Pediatrics recommendation to begin.

ELIGIBILITY Patients with histologically confirmed adenocarcinoma of the stomach except carcinomas of the esophagogastric junction ; were enrolled onto this study. Enhancing anti cancer drug efficacy: In addition to free radical scavenging, lesser galangal ingredients have been shown to enhance the ability of certain cancer fighting drugs to be more available. An example is certain cancer fighting drugs which are applied topically to skin cancers. The drug 5-fluorouracil 5-fu ; is one such drug. Volatile oils from Lesser Galangal have been shown to enhance the penetration of 5-fu into the skin, enhancing its cancer fighting ability. Effect on Fatty Acid Synthase: Compared to normal human tissues, many common human cancers, including carcinoma of the colon, prostate, ovary, breast, and endometrium, express high levels of fatty acid synthase FAS ; , the primary enzyme responsible for the synthesis of fatty acids. This differential expression of FAS between normal tissues and cancer has led to the notion that FAS is a target for anticancer drug development. Recent studies with C 75, a drug which is an inhibitor of fatty acid synthesis, have shown significant antitumor activity with concomitant inhibition of fatty acid synthesis in tumor tissue and normal liver. It is useful in stopping hemorrhages whether from the nose, lungs, uterus or bowels. In parturition where there is a hemorrhagic tendency, and where the pains are inefficient, and the parts lax, this agent will be very valuable. It will anticipate flooding, increase pains and add general vigour to the system. Dr. F. G. Reener advises the use by injection of the following for the cure of uterine ulcers. It also checks the vomiting incident to pregnancy. Cornus Ser. Viburnum Prunif. aa. equal parts. COTO AND PARA-COTO BARK. These are two distinct barks brought from Bolivia under the name of coto- bark. They are now distinguished as above. In physical appearance these two barks are strikingly different, but their therapeutical properties are very similar. The bark is a gently stimulating, tonic astringent. Its influence is especially felt by the alvine mucous membrane, and is very useful in dysentery, diarrhoea and cholera infantum. In hot infusion of zingiber it is excellent in the exhaustive discharges of cholera morbus and to quiet the pain incident thereto. With xanthoxylum, capsicum and hydrastis it will be found very valuable in cholera. Coto tones the digestive tract and is especially valuable in all lax conditions of the mucous membrane. It influences a good flow of blood toward the surface. It is very successful in the treatment of sore and spongy gums, toothache, sore mouth, sweating of the feet and the night sweats incident to phthisis. It may be used locally upon ulcers and old sores, and is valuable used as an injection to the vagina in case of excessive discharges whether leucorrheal or from ulceration. In nasal, gastric, intestinal and bronchial catarrh it will be found very valuable in cases where the discharges are in excess.
