Objectives: SCI patients with high lesions over T6 ; demonstrate multiple respiratory disorders, due to the paralysis of most inspiratory and expiratory muscles. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of an abdominal binder on FVC and FEV1 on such patients. Methods: 13 patients ASIA A ; with tetraplegia and high paraplegia, due to complete SCI above T6 neurological level, underwent spirometry evaluation, during which FVC and FEV1 were measured. Measurements were performed in 4 positions supine, 45 and 90 degrees raised on tilt bed and seated ; , and under 2 circumstances, both wearing and not wearing an abdominal binder. A portable Cosmed Pony Graphic spirometer was used for the spirometry tests. Analysis was performed with ANOVA repeated measures. Results: There was no statistically important difference in FVC with and without the abdominal binder p 0.688 ; , whilst FEV1 was statistically better when wearing the binder p 0.018 ; . Statistically important differences were found in relation to different positions, except for seated. Finally, statistically important differences between interaction coefficients of positions and belt were observed for both FVC and FEV1. Conclusions: Abdominal binders improve FEV1 in SCI patients who are seated or raised towards vertical positions. As far as FVC is concerned, they have no untoward effect. There is a small improvement, which is not statistically important.
