WHAT ARE THESE MEDICATIONS FOR ? They act to treat the type of psychiatric condition called a manic episode, and to prevent this returning, once you have recovered. A build-up of stresses may lead to a manic episode, which is the opposite of a depression. It usually occurs as part of a manic-depressive illness these days called a Bipolar disorder ; . Manic episodes tend to be distressing and disruptive experiences, and tend not to settle down unless you receive some treatment. Antimanic medications cause the mood to return to normal again. They help you to get control back: to rest, sleep and to think clearly again. WHAT ARE SOME OF THESE MEDICATIONS ? A ; NEUROLEPTIC MEDICATIONS: These medicines act to slow down manic symptoms, to bring thoughts back in touch with reality and to help you rest and sleep. There are many different names, although all are related. The best medicine for each person is chosen according to their symptoms, and to reduce any side-effects, Some common types are: Chlorpromazine Largactil ; , Thioridazine Melleril ; , Trifluoperazine Stelazine ; , Haloperidol Serenace ; , Droperidol. It's important to discuss changes in dose with your nurse and doctor, and not just stop it yourself, too quickly, or the illness might return. If your illness tends to return in cycles unless you take some of this medication regularly, it is often easier to have the neuroleptic medication as a long-lasting injection. These injections can be spread out from weekly to monthly, according to the type of medication. Some injections are called: Haldol, Piportil, or Modecate. Then the regular injections are started a few days later. Out-patient follow-up with a doctor and nurse is important to monitor your recovery. You may need to watch your diet and eat fibre 6r fruit or take a laxative, to avoid constipation. If it's a problem in the day, talk to your Dr. Sensitivity of the Skin to the Sun - On Largactil or Melleril, sunburn can occur more quickly, or you could get a rash if out in the sun. Use a sun-blocking cream, especially in summer. In hospital, the nurses can give you this. Skin Rash - An itchy rash all over can occur, even if you haven't been in the sun. This is an allergy and you should see your doctor quickly - luckily this is rare. They do not cause drowsiness, but act to treat both high and low moods - and to prevent future manic episodes or depressions.
